NY Governor's Race Twist: GOP Pushes Cure Bill After Blakeman Booted From Public Funds

A signature snag has knocked Republican governor hopeful Bruce Blakeman out of New York's public matching-funds pool, and his party is now pushing legislation that would give candidates a short window to fix paperwork errors.

A signature problem on a campaign-finance form has knocked Republican governor hopeful Bruce Blakeman out of New York's public matching-funds program, removing access to several million dollars in subsidized campaign cash and re-shaping the race weeks before the primary.

Blakeman's allies in the legislature are now pushing a cure bill that would give candidates denied by the state's campaign-finance board a short window — currently being negotiated as seven days — to fix paperwork errors and re-apply. The bill is unlikely to pass without sign-off from Albany's Democratic leadership.

Blakeman has called the denial a "ridiculous" technicality and accused the board of partisan motivation. The board has stuck to a procedural defense: the rules say the running mate must sign the form, and the form was not signed.

For the broader race, the impact is real. Public matching dollars are the difference between competitive ad buys and ad strategies built around hope. Democrats are watching closely; their own primary is its own mess.
