Amazon Doubles Down on OpenAI as Microsoft Grip Slips

By DCN News Tech Desk·2026-04-29 · 08:20·2294 reads

Amazon is talking up what it's billing as a major expansion of its tie-up with ChatGPT maker OpenAI, the latest sign that the AI giant is loosening the once-tight bear-hug from longtime backer Microsoft.

Amazon used a Tuesday press blast to talk up what it described as a major expansion of its partnership with OpenAI, hours after the AI company signaled that its long-running, exclusive-feeling relationship with Microsoft was loosening up.

The announcement is light on dollar figures but heavy on strategic language. Amazon emphasized infrastructure, custom-silicon roadmaps, and developer tooling — the kind of language that translates, in plain English, to "OpenAI is going to run more of its workloads on our stack."

For OpenAI, the move is consistent with a pattern that has been visible for months. The company is telegraphing, in big and small ways, that it does not intend to be a single-cloud captive. For Microsoft, the message is harder.

The wider AI cloud race is now firmly multi-vendor. Every model lab is hedging, every hyperscaler is courting, and the only way to lose is to assume any one of these relationships is permanent.
